History of Uptown, Minneapolis

Uptown is a commercial district in southwestern Minneapolis, Minnesota, centered at the intersection of Hennepin Avenue and West Lake Street. It has traditionally spanned the corners of four neighborhoods — Lowry Hill East, East Bde Maka Ska, South Uptown, and East Isles — all within the Calhoun Isles community. The district has no official borders, but its historical boundaries run roughly from Bde Maka Ska (formerly Lake Calhoun) on the west to Dupont Avenue on the east, and from 31st Street on the south to 28th Street on the north, with some definitions extending north toward Franklin Avenue and east to Lyndale Avenue.

Uptown grew out of the streetcar boom of the 1880s, when Bde Maka Ska (formerly Lake Calhoun), Lake Harriet, and Lake of the Isles drew vacationers to cottages, hotels, and boating along the lakes. As Minneapolis expanded south through the 1920s, a commercial district formed east of the lakes at Hennepin and Lagoon Avenues, anchored by the vaudeville-era Lagoon Theatre.

When the Lagoon burned in 1939, owners rebuilt and the business community rebranded the area — following the success of Chicago's Uptown district, the Minneapolis Tribune announced the new "Uptown" district centered on the renamed Uptown Theatre. Through the 20th century the area centered on the old West High School at Hennepin and West 28th Street, which closed in 1982 and was razed in 1984. For much of the 20th century locals still called the area "Hennepin-Lake," after its central intersection, before "Uptown" became the standard name.

Uptown built a reputation as an artist and counterculture hub — famously celebrated by Minneapolis native Prince, whose 1980 album Dirty Mind included the song "Uptown." Prince opened his New Power Generation retail store at 1408 West Lake Street in 1993. A retail renaissance arrived in the 1980s with the development of Calhoun Square at Hennepin and Lake, and the neighborhood still hosts the annual Uptown Art Fair on the first full weekend of August. The intersection of Hennepin Avenue and Lake Street remains the recognized heart of the district.

Demographics

Because Uptown has no official boundaries, population counts vary widely depending on how the district is drawn. Broader definitions that include the surrounding Lowry Hill East, East Bde Maka Ska, South Uptown, and East Isles neighborhoods put the area's population around 30,564, while a narrowly defined "Uptown" statistical area is cited as small as 1,242 residents (633 men, 609 women). Both describe the same place at different scales — the figures below reflect the broader district.

Uptown is known as a young, walkable, renter-heavy district. According to U.S. Census figures, the area's population was 30,564, split roughly evenly between 15,947 men and 14,617 women, with a median age of 29. The community recorded about 19,314 White residents, 4,930 Black residents, 4,729 Hispanic residents, 1,630 Asian residents, 514 Native American residents, and 32 Native Hawaiian residents.

Households skew small and urban: the average household size is 2.05 and average family size is 3.19, across 15,033 housing units that are roughly 75% renter-occupied. Education levels run high, with about 40% of residents holding a bachelor's degree or higher and 84.9% holding at least a high-school diploma. Reported median household income was $34,216 and median family income $38,634. The Minneapolis area code is 612.

History of Minneapolis

Minneapolis grew up around the only natural waterfall on the Mississippi River, the Falls of St. Anthony, which powered the flour and lumber mills that made the city a 19th-century industrial powerhouse. The community of St. Anthony was platted in 1849, the city of Minneapolis was incorporated in 1867, and the two merged in 1872.

By the late 1800s Minneapolis was the flour-milling capital of the world, home to firms that grew into General Mills and Pillsbury. Today Minneapolis is the largest city in Minnesota and the county seat of Hennepin County, sitting at approximately 44.97997°N, 93.26384°W. The State of Minnesota is centered near 46.7296°N, 94.6859°W. With St. Paul, it forms the Twin Cities — the 14th-largest metropolitan area in the United States.

Held every year on the first full weekend of August around the Hennepin Avenue and West Lake Street intersection, the fair draws hundreds of thousands of visitors and brings together local, national, and international artists who exhibit and sell original work. Media on display span paintings, sculpture, photography, pottery, jewelry, glass, clothing, and mixed media, alongside live music, street food, and family activities. The fair traces back to 1964 and preserves the artist culture that has defined the district since the 20th century — the same bohemian energy that musician Prince celebrated in his song "Uptown." It remains the best weekend of the year to experience the neighborhood's creative roots.
